ORCA Celebrates 25 Years
ORCA Media is is making a big to-do about the fact that Community Access Media has been around in the Central Vermont area for 25 years.
in 1985, funds were initially granted by Cox Cable, the local cable company at the time, to buy some cameras and playback equipment as well as hire a coordinator. That person was Tom Cheney, who began creating content and offering classes at the Cox office. The facility at the cable office in Berlin opened up with three playback decks, a 3/4" tape edit system, a couple of titanic-sized "portable" cameras and a bare-bones studio.
Fast forward to 2010. We offer small, easy to carry cameras, a fully-functional studio with digital recording capability, all-digital edit suites, and the ability to have your program cablecast not only on ORCA's channels, but via the Internet, across the country and beyond.
We are now located in downtown Montpelier and the cable company with which ORCA contracts is now Comcast.
We have come a long way in our 25 years.
We are celebrating that fact on Saturday July 10 with a Free Family Fun Day on the Green at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. We are still working out the details, but so far you can look for lawn games, free ice cream from Ben & Jerry's, family-friendly music provided by Christopher R. & his Flying Purple Guitar as well as the Vermont Fiddle Orchestra.
