ORCA Media is is making a big to-do about the fact that Community Access Media has been around in the Central Vermont area for 25 years.

in 1985, funds were initially granted by Cox Cable, the local cable company at the time, to buy some cameras and playback equipment as well as hire a coordinator. That person was Tom Cheney, who began creating content and offering classes at the Cox office. The facility at the cable office in Berlin opened up with three playback decks, a 3/4" tape edit system, a couple of titanic-sized "portable" cameras and a bare-bones studio.

"ORCA Media" and "The Bridge" sponsors the Montpelier Mayoral Candidates Forum

MONTPELIER – On at least one point, the two mayoral candidates were in complete agreement. Montpelier is a vibrant place to live, with a strong downtown, healthy neighborhoods and quality schools.

"People want to live here, that's a great thing," said Gary Schy, who is challenging incumbent Mayor Mary Hooper. "My children went through the school system, and when you talk to them, they have good things to say."

Among the best things about the city, Hooper added, are the neighborhoods.

"We started a campaign to get neighbors to pay attention to neighbors," she said. In addition, she said are the green, open areas around the downtown and its neighborhoods.

On a second point, they also agree. The city does face problems.

National Conference for Media Reform Update

Conclusion

This conference is about media education, media literacy, about how a literate population is empowered to affect local, state, national, even international policy. It is a conference in which some 3000 people from all over the world have come together to engage in open, thoughtful dialogue, hear some great pep talks, and become motivated to bring civic action back to their own communities.
In the past three days, I have attended panel discussions and workshops on understanding policy process, creating your own community radio station and media literacy/education.
